So Bill helped me out to make sure I was going in the right direction, and I guess this is for anyone else that was wondering too!! Platinum = too pure a metal to bend. And I guess, in research, even if there are some impurities left, they’re very minimal unlike the uncleaned metal that Toph was actually bending. If you look in the episode when she discovers it, there’s huge chunks of earth within the metal that she attaches to so she can rip it apart.

I just find this stuff really fascinating. Thanks again, Bill!

Interesting stuff.

I actually searched about that when a friend asked after watching the episode, and wikipedia explains it pretty well why platinum works for this:

“Because platinum is significantly denser than many of its impurities, the lighter impurities can be removed by simply floating them away in a liquid. Platinum is also nonmagnetic, while nickel and iron are both magnetic. These two impurities are thus removed by running an electromagnet over the mixture. Because platinum has a higher melting point than most other substances, many impurities can be burned or melted away without melting the platinum. Finally, platinum is resistant to hydrochloric and sulfuric acids, while other substances are readily attacked by them. Metal impurities can be removed by stirring the mixture in either of the two acids and recovering the remaining platinum.”

I’m only two minutes into FMA:B and I have a feeling this show is going to rip my fucking heart out.

korralations:

As soon as the kid in the metal body started talking with that adorable voice.

I have a feeling this is going to emotionally wreck me, bro.

Rip your heart out? Nah.

It’ll take it out, grind it, stomp on it, run it over with a tractor and feed it to the pigs, who will then become bacon.

And you’ll love every second of it.

It appears the Nirvash isn’t the only one to migrate into the new series.
